The PROFIBUS DP Master IP Core integrates components required for implementing a complete PROFIBUS DP Class1 and Class2 Master based on FPGA technology. Thus, no specific fieldbus controller ASIC is needed in addition.

Minimum Development Effort by Using FPGA Technology

The PROFIBUS DP Master IP Core combines all the components required for implementing a PROFIBUS DP Class 1 or Class 2 Master into a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). It consists of the PROFIBUS DP bus control logic, which is available as a loadable IP Core and the PROFIBUS DP protocol stack, ready to be used on a single soft-core processor within the FPGA. Thus, implementing a PROFIBUS DP controller only requires an appropriate FPGA holding the PROFIBUS DP Master IP Core and linking it to the control application. This control application may run on a second processor inside the FPGA or on a separate external host processor. The PROFIBUS DP Master stack includes the PROFIBUS DP versions DP-V0 for exchange of cyclic data and diagnosis with slaves, DP-V1 for acyclic data exchange and alarm handling as well as DP-V2 for clock synchronization and time-stamping.

Included Bus Control Logic Provides Flexibility

The PROFIBUS DP Master IP Core provides the complete bus control logic for accessing the PROFIBUS DP network and handling all time-critical parts of the PROFIBUS DP Data Link Layer like token handling and cyclic data exchange. Thus, it overcomes the dependency on the availability of an additional fieldbus controller ASIC, which typically only is available from a single source. As a consequence, additional flexibility is gained when implementing a PROFIBUS DP controller.

Improved Plant Availability

The Softing PROFIBUS DP Master protocol stack of the PROFIBUS DP IP Core provides a couple of features, which may improve the plant availability. These features for instance include master redundancy functionality providing a seamless switchover from the primary to the backup PROFIBUS DP Master and optional line redundancy functionality for accessing field devices via redundant fieldbus cables. In addition, also the re-configuration of single PROFIBUS slaves is supported without shutting-down the plant, resulting in a major advantage especially for using the PROFIBUS DP Master protocol stack in process automation applications.
